Sci-Fi elements: They are usually caused by diseases or large explosions or nuclear waste
In general, there are large weapons (primarily shotguns) used to battle them off
Fantasy: They are mythical creatures along with vampires and werewolves (which in most cases [except Joseph's] are fantasy)
They are often set in the past

i say sci fi because zombies have nothing at all to do with unicorns.

i must say sci-fi and this is why: technically it is humanly possible to reanimate a dead being for example some scientists took a dead monkey and replaced the brain after doing some other crud they got the monkey to live again, but of course thats not the only way, say someone was recently deaceased most of their cells would be in OK shape so if you reactivated then and somehow got them to start multiplying again you could, in theory reanimate the body, however if the brain needed cell multiplication to memory loss could be quite substantial or could even cause brain damage if something went wrong, the person could have complete memory loss and be a completely different person than they were before, another example on a much smaller scale, scientists have been able to culturize tissues before, but now they have been able to specialize these cells turning then into artificial skin,organs,even ears pieces. Modern science is astounding.

woooooow. modern frankenstein. when i die, i will haunt the doctors with all of my ability if they try to make me live again. i will make headless people appear in their mirrors when they are brushing their teeth every night if i have to. i will put dead squirrels in their cereal boxes. i will make every dvd they own turn into a message saying "you will die in 7 days". they will be sorry if they try to "save" me. so if i die and anyone reading this was my doctor, stay away from me.
